Quilt Batting Price Comparison September 2023
Quilt batting price comparison chart in September 2023
I received an email notifying me that I have a chance to purchase batting rolls from a co-op. Someone in St.George, Utah is organizing a purchase of 150-250 rolls of batting at a distributor level. She is charging 10% for handling fee. Members of this co-op has a chance to purchase batting on a roll close to the wholesale price. Pick up has to happen on the delivery day at her house. No delivery is currently offered to Las Vegas customers. Minimum purchase of 2 rolls per order. If you combine your order with friends and meet the minimum, you can buy in.
4 days before I got the email, I had a roll of 40 yards of batting just delivered to my door step. Obviously I didn't need any more batting right off the bat but I was curious to know the price difference between online shops to big box shops with coupons and distributor pricing with 10% handling fee, so I decided to research and make a price comparison chart. Here is what I found out:
As of September 2023
| Seller | Brand | Type | Width x Length | Price | Cost of Shipping |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amazon | Hobbs | 80/20 poly/cotton | 96" x 30 yards | $218 | Free Shipping |
| Amazon | Hobbs | 100% cotton | 96" x 30 yards | $229.45 | Free Shipping |
| Co-op | Hobbs | 80/20 poly/cotton | 96" x 30 yards | $133 | Cost to Ship |
| Co-op | Hobbs | 100% cotton | 96" x 30 yards | $168 | Cost to Ship |
| BattingSuperSale | Dream Cotton Natural Request | 100% cotton | 93" x 30 yards | $269.95 | Free Shipping |
| BattingSuperSale | Dream Cotton Natural Select | 100% cotton | 93" x 30 yards | $323.95 | Free Shipping |
| BattingSuperSale | Dream Cotton Natural Supreme | 100% cotton | 93" x 30 yards | $557.95 | Free Shipping |
| BattingSuperSale | Elegant | 100% cotton | 96" x 30 yards | $279.95 | Free Shipping |
| Joann | Warm & Natural | 100% cotton | 90" x 40 yards | $279.99 | Free Shipping |
Shipping charge for the co-op hasn't been disclosed as of today. On top of this, 4 hours of round trip of driving from Las Vegas plus cost of gas for the pick up needs to be calculated into the equation.
Last time I purchased Warm & Natural 100% cotton 90" x 40 yards was back in November 2019. It was $133 per roll. It was free shipping. The same product costs more than double today. It's been less than 4 years since my last purchase. This was shocking.
As I researched batting prices, I faced a wall. Just by the description, I could not tell the difference between Hobbs Tuscany 100% wool and Hobbs Heirloom 100% wool. Hobbs Tuscany costs more but brittle and thin. You can tear it off with small effort. Hobbs Heirloom costs less but it's denser and has some loft than Tuscany. Descriptions are the same on their official website. The only difference is for the wool, here is beading warning along with no to wash with the hot water in a front loading washing machine.
I also found out about Hobbs 80/20 Cotton/Wool blend. I thought 80/20 refers to only poly/cotton. I was wrong. I posted about 80/20 cotton/wool blend on hand quilting group on Facebook. People tried to correct me. We learn something new everyday!
